Verifone Inc., the leading provider of payment solutions, today announced that it has been chosen by The Carphone Warehouse Group PLC, Europe’s leading independent mobile communications retailer, to deliver a bespoke Chip and PIN upgrade solution based on the SC 5000 programmable smart card secure customer-facing device. A total of 3,000 SC 5000s are being rolled out throughout all Carphone Warehouse stores in the UK, to comply with EMV specifications that came into full effect with the 1st January 2005 liability shift.
Verifone was chosen to upgrade the EPoS estate because of its expertise in customising solutions to the needs of its customers. The Carphone Warehouse required a dual function secure customer-facing device that, in addition to handling EMV-compliant card transactions, would facilitate the SIM card back-up application that all of its stores offer to customers. Verifone’s bespoke Chip and PIN upgrade solution included specially written software that enables The Carphone Warehouse to continue its SIM back-up service, while benefiting from the SC 5000’s secure and user-friendly transactions.
Martin Holmes, Project Manager of The Carphone Warehouse Group, said, “Verifone was the obvious choice for us when deciding how best to meet the Chip and PIN challenge. This solution has allowed us to maintain our high standards of customer service through the continuation of our SIM card back-up service.”
Commenting on today’s announcement, Nigel Bidmead, EMEA Managing Director for Verifone said, “We are very pleased that our Chip and PIN upgrade solution has been handpicked by another high-profile UK retail chain.” He added, “This is further evidence of our commitment to delivering electronic payment solutions that match the advanced requirements of our customers.”
Stylish and easy to handle, the SC 5000 provides the fastest, easiest way to upgrade terminals or EPoS to an EMV-compatible solution. The SC 5000 is protected by a comprehensive array of hardware and software-based security features and adheres to Triple DES (3DES) encryption standards being adopted by the payment industry to raise the level of fraud protection for PIN-based debit transactions.
