WABC’s “Eyewitness News” to Provide News & Information to Thousands of Taxis Over New Customer-Facing Payment Systems

New York - February 08, 2007 - WABC-TV/Channel 7, the most-watched station in New York, announced today it will provide news content to the city’s famed yellow cabs. The news will be “broadcast” over integrated payment and content delivery systems developed and installed by Verifone Transportation Systems, an alliance of Verifone Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: PAY) and Taxitronic, the leading supplier of taxicab meters in New York.

The new systems deliver the latest technology enhancements mandated by the Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) and will be installed in taxis over the course of the next year.

As part of the partnership, WABC will provide a customized version of its market-leading “Eyewitness News,” updated several times a day with the latest news and weather information. The video will be fed via wireless broadband technology from WABC’s website hub,, to thousands of moving taxicabs equipped by Verifone Transportation Systems.

“As New York's most popular television station, it’s only fitting that WABC will be part of a New York City icon – the famed yellow taxis. We will work to make ‘Eyewitness News’ available to our viewers wherever they are – whether watching Channel 7, using our website, sampling new digital channels, or viewing the latest news on cell phones. I’m thrilled that our content will be available in New York’s taxis as well,” said Dave Davis, President and General Manager of WABC.

The content delivery capabilities are part of a comprehensive system designed to enable the acceptance of credit and debit cards, automate collection and submission of trip data, deliver content to passengers, and provide electronic message transmission to drivers. Currently, the systems and the station’s content are available in 50 taxis as part of a final technology trial by the TLC. Verifone Transportation Systems will soon make the systems available to all taxi medallion owners.

In addition to WABC content, ESPN, the station’s corporate partner, is providing sports news on the 50 trial systems. Zagat Survey, the leading provider of trusted dining and entertainment information in New York, is also providing ratings, reviews, and directory information for restaurants, nightlife spots, shopping options and hotels, all available with a touch screen located in the taxi passenger compartment.

The systems will also feature a GPS map and an electronic credit card reader for fares and tolls. The unique interactive systems were designed by Verifone Transportation Systems under guidelines from the TLC as part of a service improvement system designed to enhance fleet management and improve customer service.

WABC will serve as the primary sales agent for advertising on the systems. Advertisers will be able to choose from a variety of video and interactive messages, reaching hundreds of thousands of taxi riders in a unique environment. TLC research shows that a majority of passengers are New York City residents, often part of the demographics most attractive to providers of high-end services, technology, and leisure activities. New York’s role as a world financial center gives advertisers a chance to reach market leaders and decision makers.

WABC-TV/Channel 7 is the ABC owned station in New York, and the most-watched local television station in the country. WABC produces more than 30 hours a week of "Eyewitness News," the most popular local newscast in New York. The station also produces "Live with Regis and Kelly", the country's most popular morning talk show. In addition to other top-rated syndicated shows like "Oprah," "Wheel of Fortune" and "Jeopardy," WABC is the leading outlet for the ABC's network schedule of entertainment, sports and news programs. WABC also provides local content to two new digital channels, its website, and wireless providers.
