While the current phase of the U.S. chip card migration is still far from the finish line, attention is turning to the 'next' EMV migration at gas stations, which figures to be just as challenging.

Payments made by mobile phones could soon become the norm in the UAE. That’s according to delegates who are meeting in Dubai for the Cards & Payments Middle East exhibition.

Transaction Services (TRX) is now offering Level 3 EMV certified application to all of its U.S. payment customers to provide the most secure environment for card present online sales. Level 3 certification specifically reviews the software that handles EMV transactions for chip-based technology. It is an end-to-end certification conducted between the merchant and the card networks. TRX checks the integrity of the entire payment process by testing every type of possible transaction that the terminal can perform.

A majority of credit cards in the U.S. now contain a chip designed to add more security -- yet most payment terminals at retailers can't read the new technology. And the situation isn't going to improve anytime soon.

The city of Chicago is designating two firms to offer ride-hailing apps in the city's taxi fleet, a move meant to boost a cab industry besieged by competition from services such as Uber and Lyft. By Feb. 1, all of the city's 12,700 licensed taxi drivers will be required to use either a smartphone hailing app offered by a New York company called Arro, or one called Curb, a product of San Jose, Calif.-based Verifone, the city said.

01/07/2016

The city of Chicago has been pushing toward a universal taxi hailing app since at least 2014, and Mayor Rahm Emanuel made campaign promises to bring such an app to the city. Now, his administration has selected two companies to provide the app, with a planned launch date of February 1. On that date, all of Chicago’s medallion taxi drivers will be required use apps provided by Arro or Verifone (NASDAQ: PAY), the Chicago Sun-Times reported, making Chicago perhaps the first American city with such a system.

In a letter obtained by the paper, president of the independent company Pamela Martinez writes to shareholders that "We are in a midst of serious financial setbacks", Namely, those setbacks are lawsuits, Uber, and Lyft. Some of these financial setbacks "are due to business challenges beyond our control and others are of our own making", she wrote.

01/06/2016

Chicago cabdrivers got a high-tech boost Wednesday in their fight for survival in the ride-hailing era. One year after campaigning for re-election on a promise to deliver a citywide taxi app like the one pioneered by Uber, Mayor Rahm Emanuel is finally getting around to delivering the system that could put cabs on equal footing with the ride-hailing giant whose investors include the mayor’s brother.

CITY HALL — The city has selected two smartphone apps to give riders the same access to taxis they already enjoy with upstart services like Uber, Lyft and Sidecar. Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced Wednesday Arro and Verifone won the competitive bidding process to provide a universal taxi app for all cab service in the city. They'll go head to head starting Feb. 1, and all of the city's 12,700 cabbies will be required to use one or the other.

01/06/2016

While ride-sharing services such as Uber and Lyft continue to make it more convenient (and affordable) to hitch a ride in Chicago, the city is attempting to make hailing a taxi a simpler process. Today, Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced that the city has selected Arro and Verifone as the city's universal taxi app providers. Each app will allow users to hail a taxi using a smartphone, request a fare quote and make secure payments for their rides.

01/06/2016

The City of Chicago is launching a universal taxi app service, and all licensed cab drivers will be required to participate. Chicago will be the first city with a universal smartphone app for cabs, according to the announcement. Arro and Verifone have won the competitive bidding process to create the app, Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the Chicago Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection announced in a statement Wednesday.

01/06/2016

Mayor Rahm Emanuel's administration has chosen two companies to develop long-discussed universal taxi hailing apps designed to help traditional cabs compete with ride-share companies, new technology that could come with higher rates for passengers who use the service. Arro and Verifone were picked from 11 applicants to put in place the taxi apps, and all of the city's 12,700 licensed cab drivers will be required by Feb. 1 to use one service or the other while on duty, according to a Wednesday announcement from Emanuel's office.
